Louis Hoffmann - 1850s
His pension file contains an affidavit that shows that on "May 23, 1855, I united in Marriage at my residence Fort Ham. Mr. Louis Hoffman of Baden, Germany (U.S.A.) and Miss Caroline Greenwald of Byrne, Germany (Ft. Ham.)." "U.S.A" stands for United States Army. The witnesses were John Berringer and Aloris Bahr both U.S.A. The entry was written by Michael Scofield, rector of S. John's Church. St. John's Church was founded in 1834 and was known as the "Church of the Generals." It is located at 99th and Fort Hamilton Parkway. The pension file also says she was a laundress of "F" company 4th Regt Artillery regular army from 1855 or 1856. She came to New York on September 2, 1852 and her name on the ship’s record is listed as Kunigunde Grünewald.

Louis continued to serve at Fort Hamilton until November 13, 1856 when his company left New York en route for Florida. They disembarked off Ship Hemisphere and embarked on the steamboat Ranger for Fort Myers, Florida. They camped at Camp Walbach. During the third Seminole Indian War, numerous missions around southern and central Florida are listed for the 4th Artillery. Louis was on detached service to Fort Kissimmee for part of the time during 1856.
I believe Louis’ wife and son traveled with him throughout most of his military career. |
