John August Steinbach immigrates to Wisconsin.
According to Merton Steinbach, "When J. August decided to immigrate to America, he could not convince Johanna Rosine to accompany him. J. August decided to file a court action against his wife, and a German judge decreed that J. August could take the young children with him to America. Johanna Rosine then decided to immigrate to America with her husband in order to be with her children. Johanna Rosine was reluctant to leave her comfortable life and her family in Saxony for the forested frontier in Wisconsin."
John Paul's father Johann August Steinbach and other family members immigrated to the United States on the Ship Herschel. They left Hamburg May 3 or 4, 1848 and they arrived in New York, New York July 1, 1848. His family traveling with him included his second wife Johanna (33) and their children Christina (8), Carl (7), Gottfried (5), and Maria (6 months). After arriving in New York, a typical trip at that time involved several boat trips first by steamboat up the Hudson River to Albany, then by canal or railroad to Buffalo, and finally across the Great Lakes to either Milwaukee or Sheboygan. Trains were not available yet within Wisconsin. They arrived in Mayville, Wisconsin September 29, 1848. Family lore is that Paul walked to Milwaukee to greet his father and his second family when they arrived in Wisconsin. They settled on separate farms in Williamstown Township, Wisconsin. Johann Paul purchased forty acres August 1, 1849. The NESE 4th PM – 1831 Section 25 in Township 12 North of Range 16 East. Johann August purchased 55.0900 acres of land just before he died. The NW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 30 in Township 12 North of Range 17 East.

It is believed that this plate which shows the village of Wechselburg was brought to America by Johann August Steinbach (1795-1850) and Johanna Rosine (Finsterbusch) Steinbach (1815-1882 or 83) when they immigrated to America in 1848.
