John Paul Steinbach immigrated to Williamstown Township east of Mayville, Wisconsin in 1847. The US government opened the Wisconsin Territory to settlement in the late 1830's at $1.25 an acre. “Originally inhabited by the Fox, Potawatomi, and Winnebago native American tribes, the surrounding area was mainly populated by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. Mayville was founded in 1845 by Alvin and William Foster and Chester and E.P. May. It was also home to Wisconsin's First Iron Smelter. Mayville sits along the Rock River.” It is located fifty-five miles northwest of Milwaukee.
