Louis Hoffmann died October 16, 1889 at the age of sixty years, one hundred forty-four days. The following article describes the accident. You’ll note his age is inaccurate in the obituary.
Newpaper clipping: Review, Oct. 22, 1889 "The sad and sudden death of Louis Hoffman, an old resident of this city, occurred early last Thursday morning. At about five o'clock in the afternoon of the previous day he fell from a wagon and, although to all appearances he was unhurt, he no doubt sustained internal injuries, which, with rheumatism of the heart, caused his death. He was put to bed after the fall and his relatives were astonished the next morning to find him dead. The funeral services were held on Friday afternoon and the remains deposited in the city cemetery with G.A.R. ceremonies. The deceased was 62 years of age and was well known here, where until recent years, he has plied the vocation of carpenter and builder. For ten years, he was in the regular service of the U. S. army..." Her obituary from the April 15, 1892 Post is written in German. It indicates, "Mrs. Karoline Hoffmann, widow of the late Louis Hoffmann died yesterday morning at 2 o'clock after a lingering illness. She reached an age of 60 years, was born in Bavaria, and since 1858 settled in this area. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock. She leaves behind a son, Mr. John hoffmann."
