Louis Hoffmann - 1850's Florida to Nebraska
On September 21, 1857, the Company left Fort Myers and arrived at Fort Dulaney the same day. Fort Dulaney barracks is shown here. They embarked on board the Schooner Suffolk on the 23rd and arrived at New Orleans City on the 27th. Next they embarked on Steamboat William M. Morrison enroute for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Territory. They arrived there on the 12th of October 1857. The levy pilings where the steamboats docked are still visible at Fort Leavenworth. A marker shows the route through the fort that travelers took to the Oregon Trail. They remained camped near Fort Leavenworth until May 28th when they left for Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory. They arrived there June 27, 1858.

Wikipedia states, “Despite its lack of fortifications, Fort Kearny served as way station, sentinel post, supply depot, and message center for 49'ers bound for California and homeseekers traveling to California, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Kearny
I visited Fort Kearny, Nebraska. The original fort had been dismantled and the wood taken further west to construct other forts. The stockade has been reconstructed. |
