Grünewald Siblings
All of Caroline Grünewald's surviving siblings immigrated to the United States in their early twenties. They changed the spelling of their last name to Greenwalt in the United States.
Johann Adam Grünewald / Greenwalt
Adam arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on 6 December 1841. He settled in Long Marsh, Clarke County, Virginia near the West Virginia border. He married Barbara Elizabeth Pope (Popp) on 3 April 1846 at the Wickliffe Episcopal Church in Clarke County. Barbara was also born in Helmstadt, Bavaria. Her parents were Johann Michel Popp and Ursula Wander. Her father lived with them in 1850 according to the United States Census. Initially, Adam worked as a laborer on area farms. In 1869 he purchased three acres from Mr. Allen who owned one of the farms where he worked. It was located near the old Stone's Church five miles north of Berryville. Her brothers Michael and Conrad had farms near Adam's property and her brother John Michael was a tailor in Berryville. Adam and his wife had seven children:

Adam died 14 July 1893. His wife Barbara Elizabeth died 21 July 1906 at her daughter Sarah Elizabeth Stolle's home in Berryville. A link to her obituary is at the bottom of this page. They are buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, Virginia.

John arrived in the Baltimore, Maryland on 15 September 1845. He settled in Greenway Township, Clarke County, Virginia which is south of Berryville. He married Susan Elizabeth Kerby 28 Jan 1848 at the Wickliffe Episcopal Church and had one son named William who was born in 1853. Like his brother Adam he worked as a laborer on area farms and later was a tailor. There is no record of his purchasing land. John died 20 February 1891 of pneumonia.
Anna Maria Grünewald Bahr
"Anna Maria" is also known as Mary Ann and she married Alois Bahr in Bavaria. The New York State 1855 Census record shows Anna and their three children Johann, Lorenz, and Kilian living with her husband Alois Bahr at Fort Hamilton. The children were born in Bavaria. Alois served in the United States Army for five years at Fort Hamilton in New Utrecht, New York. The family stayed in the New Utrecht / Brooklyn area after he left the service. They had five more children: Mary, Anne, Elizabeth, Estelline, and Alois Joseph. Mary died 1 August 1890 and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York..
