The Grünewald family lived in Helmstadt, Bavaria. Helmstadt is a small village near Würzburg. They attended St Martin's Catholic church. Johann Grünewald (1789 - 1835) and Anna Margaretha Rauch (1796 - 1839) were married in Helmstadt, Bavaria 9 Jan 1816. They died while their children were quite young. Caroline would have been four when her father died and eight when her mother died.
They had eight children: Johann Adam 24 Dec 1816 - 1817 Johann Adam 30 Jan 1818 - 1893 Johann 19 Oct 1821 - 1891 Anna Maria 3 Apr 1823 - 1 Aug 1890 Unknown girl 1824 - 1824 Unknown girl 1827 - 1827 Johann Joseph 31 Oct 1828 - Kunigunde 18 May 1831 - 14 Apr 1892 Kunigunde" also known as Caroline was married to Louis Hoffmann. The spelling of her first name varies in US Census records among Caroline, Karoline, and Kunigunde. She adopted the surname "Greenwald" when living in New Utrecht (Brooklyn), New York.
Kunigunde came to America in 1852 with her sister Anna Maria's family. The New York Passenger List shows the following: Ship: Southerner To: New York From: Hamburg Arrived: 02 Sep 1852 Grünewald, Joseph 50 male Laborer Bavaria destination USA (I think his age may be wrong.) Anna 29 female Bavaria destination USA Johann 5 male Bavaria destination USA Lorenz 2 male Bavaria destination USA Kilian .06 months male infant Bavaria destination USA Kunigunde 21 female Bavaria destination USA
I have never found any records for Joseph Grünewald after his arrival in the United States and do not know how he relates to Kunigunde and Anna Maria Grünewald..
Caroline Greenwald and Louis Hoffmann were married 23 May 1855 at Saint John's church at Fort Hamilton, New York. Her brother-in-law Alois Bahr was a witness at Caroline Greenwald's marriage to Louis Hoffmann. Alois and Lewis served at Fort Hamilton at that time.
Louis' pension file indicates she was a laundress for Company F and she and their son travelled with him throughout most of his military career.
According to the 1864 Baltimore City Directory, Kunigunda Hoffman lived at 141 S. Exeter while her husband's unit served in the Civil War. Her occupation is listed as laundress.
Her obituary from the April 15, 1892 Post which is written in German indicates, "Mrs. Karoline Hoffmann, widow of the late Louis Hoffmann died yesterday morning at 2 o'clock after a lingering illness. She reached an age of 60 years, was born in Bavaria, and since 1858 settled in this area. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock. She leaves behind a son, Mr. John Hoffmann." Her husband was stationed at Fort Rigley near New Ulm from 1859 to 1861.
