Newspaper clipping: Review, Oct. 18, 1916 "...The funeral was held from the Friedens church Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of the New Ulm Fire Department of which Mr. Hoffmann had long been a member. Mr. Hoffmann was taken ill of pneumonia while visiting his daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Gedosch, of Paynesville, Minn., a few weeks ago. He was able to be brought home a couple of weeks ago, and on Sunday, October 8, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, and from that time until his death on the following Wednesday, he was unconscious. ..." Following her husband's death, Emma continued to live in her home and Louise's family lived with her. Louise's daughter Louise talked about living with their Grandma Emma Hoffmann, who spoke only German. Thus, the kids all knew German very well. They all told about how she loved to ride in the car. Although she didn't know much English, she caught on when anyone talked about leaving in the car. When they went out, she would be found already sitting in the car to be sure she could come along. |
