Paul and Elisabeth's Children
John David had a farm at Bertha, Minnesota and his brother Louis worked on the farm with him in 1880. David married Augusta Minnie Klebs August 16, 1882. His wife gave birth to a daughter Minnie Elisabeth on July 31, 1883. John David was murdered three months later on October 24, 1883 by David’s neighbors Samuel Sahli and Mary Sahli. He was beaten with a club and stabbed with a single-tine pitchfork. One stab wound pierced the bone above his nose. He was killed during an argument over access to David's farm via a public road that crossed the Sahli farm. They were convicted of manslaughter in the second degree and both served prison time. Mary Sahli was several months pregnant at the time.
Emma Mary stayed in New Ulm and married John Louis Hoffmann in 1878. Emma and John lived in the Bertha area briefly and their son Henry David was born in Bertha June 18, 1882. She had fourteen children. Emma died May 5, 1927 in Minneapolis while visiting her son John and daughter Nellie. She had complications related to her diabetes.
On August 4, 1881 Paul's daughter Anna married Gotfred Mical Migge who was a butcher in Wadena, Minnesota. They ultimately had four children together and then moved to Centralia, Washington sometime between 1905 and 1910. Their children were:
Laura E 1882 - 1960 Gottfried August 1883 - 1936 Elizabeth L 1885 - 1967 William Grover 1888 - 1948 Census records indicate she was an inmate at Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington (Western State Hospital) from at least 1920 until her death May 18, 1944. Louis John acquired a 160 acre farm adjoining those of his brother Frank and sister Lizzie. Frank died in 1884 before receiving the deed to his farm. It was customary to live on a farm several years before receiving the deed. Louis married Ida Kurz December 25, 1885 in Wadena. They had two sons:
John Louis 1886 - 1947 Edward David 1895 - 1960 The 1900 US Census shows Louis living in Park Rapids, Todd Township in Hubbard County, Minnesota with his wife and two sons. His son John Louis attended high school there. He rented a home and worked as a livery man. In about 1903 Louis, his wife and two sons moved to Sand Point and then Salem, Oregon. Their sons settled in Tillamook, Oregon and became employed in the ship-building industry. Louis and Ida divorced in 1904. On October 13, 1904 Louis married Amelia Anna Broesch (Brush) in Washington. According to a newspaper obituary, Louis returned to Minnesota in about 1908 and died of pneumonia March 5, 1910 in International Falls, Minnesota. |
Louisa Elisabeth (Lizzie) The 1880 US Census records Lizzie working as a servant in a boarding house in nearby Aldrich Township in Wadena County. In 1886 Lizzie acquired her own 160 acre farm in Clearwater County west of Bemidji, Minnesota. Her homestead adjoined those of her brothers Frank and Louis. She also served as guardian to David Steinbach’s daughter Minnie after Minnie's mother died. Lizzie married Carl Nagel in 1894 in New Ulm and lived in nearby Cottonwood. They had two sons Carl and Harold together. She died August 25, 1923 there.
I assume it was taken at the time of their mother's death.
